The Kansas City Chiefs have been forced to sign yet another kicker since Harrison Butker went down with a leg injury that sent him onto Injured Reserve a couple of weeks ago.
The defending Super Bowl champions brought in Spencer Shrader as Butker’s replacement, luring the rookie away from the New York Jets’ practice squad. But the former South Florida and Notre Dame kicker got hurt himself after two games at Arrowhead Stadium.
With Shrader increasingly unlikely to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Black Friday, the Chiefs reunited with journeyman Matthew Wright, who signed with their practice squad on Tuesday. Wright made his last NFL appearance earlier this season, filling in for the injured San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody in the Week 6 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

He made all of his three field goal attempts, the longest coming from 41 yards away. Wright has played in 25 NFL games for five different teams since turning pro in 2019 while moving between different practice squads around the league.
The UCF product’s journey has seen him make a couple of stops in Kansas City before – he signed with the Chiefs when Butker struggled with injuries during the 2022 campaign. During those two stints, he made 3-of-4 field goals and converted all of his extra-point attempts in two games.
Wright arrived after Shrader missed Tuesday’s practice with a hamstring issue, putting his availability for the Black Friday matchup with the Raiders in doubt. His Kansas City return was a part of a flurry of roster moves by the Chiefs.

The team also restored tight end Baylor Cupp to the practice squad while signing tackle D.J. Humphries and placing tight end Peyton Hendershot on the reserve/injured list. Additionally, they terminated practice squad contracts of defensive end Truman Jones and tackle Lucas Niang.
The Chiefs moved to 10-1 on the season following Sunday’s 30-27 win over the Panthers. They managed to come out victorious in yet another closer-than-anticipated contest, in big part thanks to Patrick Mahomes’ magic.
After the clash, Mahomes admitted that he would like to see his team start to rack up more convincing Ws eventually. “You want to have some blowouts,” he told reporters.
“You want be a little calmer in the fourth quarter. I’ve always said it can be a good thing as you get to the playoffs and later in the season, just knowing that you’ve been in those moments before and knowing how to kind of attack it. But I would love to win a game [before] the very last play.”
