Wrexham has announced the signing of defender Callum Doyle from Premier League giants Manchester City, with the Welsh side still in search of its first Championship win of the season
Ryan Reynolds and Rob Macs Wrexham has broken the bank once again in what is proving to be a transformative summer transfer window for the Welsh minnows, this time splashing out on Manchester City and England Under-21 star, Callum Doyle, as injuries continue to pile up at the Racecourse Ground.
The 21-year-old center backs arrival was confirmed on Thursday by the Red Dragons, with Doyle signing a four-year deal with the Championship side. Im buzzing to join the Club, Doyle said in a statement.
Ive been wanting a permanent move for some time now and I cant wait to get started. Ive been interested in the Club from afar and kept a close eye on the journey and now Im excited to be a part of it.
As for head coach Phil Parkinson, he said that both he and the club are delighted following Doyles arrival, describing him as a talented young player with a lot of Championship experience. Were looking forward to him joining up with the squad and working with him.
Having broken through the City academy, Doyle made his professional debut aged just 17 during a loan spell with then League One side Sunderland, which saw him come on as a substitute in their Play Off final win over Wycombe at Wembley Stadium.
He spent the next three seasons on loan in the Championship with Coventry City, Leicester City, and Norwich City. In all, he joins Wrexham for around $10 million, as per ESPN, with 98 Championship appearances to his name, having made one Championship Play-Off Final appearance with Coventry, whilst also winning the English second-tier in 2024 with Leicester.
Doyles arrival marks the tenth signing of the summer for Wrexham, with the club having already spent just under $25 million, according to Transfermarkt, prior to him joining. This includes their record-breaking deals for New Zealand international Liberato Cacade, Lewis OBrien from Nottingham Forest, and Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town.
Their squads transformation has also seen Parkinsons side add the likes of Championship veterans Kieffer Moore, Josh Windass, and Conor Coady.
Unfortunately for the Red Dragons, injuries have already taken their toll on their young Championship campaign, which has seen them lose to both Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. Windass is the latest player to have been sidelined by injury, with the longtime Sheffield Wednesday star facing four to six weeks out of action with a hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, Cacace and fellow new arrival George Thomason are also both nursing injuries, along with Ollie Rathbone, Jay Rodriguez, and Andy Cannon, according to The Leader.
Obviously, it’s a blow because he’s been great for us, Parkinson admitted of losing Windass. Even in the first half hour against West Brom, he was really good and obviously down at Southampton. It is really frustrating for him and for us, but it’s part and parcel of football and we’ve got to deal with it. With the international break coming up, by the time that’s finished, he won’t be far off.
Wrexham will look to finally get their Championship campaign off the ground with a win on Saturday when Windass former side heads for the Racecourse Ground, after which theyll head for Preston North End in the EFL Cup second round, having won their opener in dramatic style against Hull City.
Their fourth Championship game of the season follows with a trip to Millwall on August 30, followed by the international break. Their first game back will take place on September 30 with QPR making the trip to Wales.
