Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger believes the sky is the limit for Pittsburgh this season after watching Aaron Rodgers in person.
Since inking a one-year, $13.65 million contract with the Steelers this offseason, it hasnt taken long for Rodgers to win over the support of many of his teammates. Now, it appears as though the four-time MVP additionally has the backing of a franchise legend.
On Wednesday, Roethlisberger stopped by Acrisure Stadium to watch the Steelers face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a joint practice. Upon getting a close-up look at Rodgers and the offense, the 43-year-old conceded that hed need to revise his previous prediction that Pittsburgh would go 11-6 this season. It comes as Rodgers’ fans were left terrified after seeing a photo secretly taken during Steelers’ practice.
Roethlisberger said during a recent episode of his Footbahlin podcast: Watching Aaron work, he threw one pass and as he started to walk over, I was like, Man, tell you what one thing doesnt stop working, thats that arm. His arm looks good.
At some point before the season starts, Im gonna go back through my football notebook, and I might have to readjust my pick for the season in wins and losses.
In particular, Roethlisberger was most impressed by the budding connection between Rodgers and DK Metcalf, who received a five-year, $150 million contract extension from the Steelers soon after being traded by the Seattle Seahawks.
I know we havent seen what DK Metcalf can do on a football field, Roethlisberger added. He has not had a quarterback even close to the caliber of Aaron Rodgers. And that is not a knock on the other quarterbacks hes had, anything like that. But hes going to play with a Hall of Famer, hes going to play with a billion-time MVP.
Those two could go crazy. And Aarons had some great receivers, dont get me wrong, but he hasnt had a dude like this either.
Before Roethlisberger could get too far ahead of himself, however, he noted that Rodgers and Metcalf are still working on building chemistry together.
Im watching them at practice, and theyre still working through things. And it may take a couple weeks to get going because theyre probably not gonna play in the preseason this week either, he explained.
So its gonna take a few weeks, potentially. I mean, youre gonna see some flashes, youre gonna see some great things. So let me tell you this. When they get going, Im telling you its gonna be something special.
While Roethlisberger has been more than impressed with what hes seen from Rodgers, he additionally questioned if the Steelers offensive line would be able to effectively protect him. “Can Aaron have enough time to throw the ball?” he asked.
“And that’s not a knock on the line, that’s just a question I’m gonna ask. Because if he can have the time to throw the ball, you’re going to see some crazy stuff happen.
We’ve always talked about the question of the o-line, but it always is [a question]. You’re only going to be as good as your o-line is. If they can give Aaron time, watch out.”
It comes after a male NFL cheerleader issued a blunt response to critics after a huge backlash.
