As award show season is in full swing, we’re taking a look at all the record-breaking moments that could occur during this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.
This year, Hollywood’s most talented stars are gathering for the 97th annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles to recognize the greatest in cinematic achievements within the past year. This year’s awards including nominations for 10 different films and will feature 24 different categories including honors in acting, cinematography, directing, writing, and more.
And this year could be an especially memorable ceremony as it could be full of incredible historical firsts for the acting industry. While some records have already been broken, there are many more to come. Some historical firsts could include the youngest actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category, the first openly transgender actress to win in any acting category, the first Brazilian actress to win the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, among many others.

And as the highly anticipated ceremony is nearly upon us, we’re taking a closer look at some actors and directors that could be bringing home these history breaking wins including Timothée Chalamet, Karla Sofía Gascón, Fernanda Torres, and Coralie Fargeat.
This year, actor Timothée Chalamet could be making Oscars history as he could be the youngest ever star to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category. This record was previously held by actor Adrien Brody following his performance in the 2002 film The Pianist, which he was awarded when he was 29 and 11 months old. If Timothée were to secure this win, he would beat out the previously held record by a small window as he is currently 29 and two months old.
In addition to this, Timothée would also become the second French actor to ever win this category. This comes after French actor Jean Dujardin’s was recognized with the honor in 2012 for his role in the movie The Artist. In this category, Timothée will be up against a number of gifted actors including Adrien Brody from The Brutalist, Colman Domingo from Sing Sing, Ralph Fiennes from Conclave, and Sebastian Stan from The Apprentice.
Timothée has been nominated by the Academy following his remarkable performance as a young Bob Dylan in the biopic A Compete Unknown. This film followed the story of the legendary musician’s journey to fame and his most intimate and influential relationships during this formative time in his life.
Actress Karla Sofía Gascón could also go down in Oscars history as the first openly transgender individual to win an Oscar and the first-ever transgender actress to win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category. In addition to this, Karla could also be the first Spanish actress to win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category.
Karla was nominated for the honor following her performance as Emilia in Netflix’s musical thriller Emilia Pérez. In the movie, Karla plays the Mexican crime boss who seeks out a lawyer (Saldaña) who can help her transition into becoming a woman as she retires from her former life.
In the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, the 52-year-old star will be facing off against Cynthia Erivo from Wicked, Mikey Madison from Anora, Demi Moore from The Substance, and Fernanda Torres from I’m Still Here.
Actress Fernanda Torres could also go down in Academy Awards history as the first Brazilian actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category. She would also be the second Brazilian-born Oscar winner ever after Luciana Arrighi became the first for his 1994 win for the Best Art Direction.
Fernanda was nominated for an Oscar following her performance as Eunice Paiva in the historical drama I’m Still Here. In the gripping film, Fernanda stars as a widow who is on a journey to uncover the truth about the heartbreaking disappearance of her husband who worked as a former PTB deputy.
In the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, she will be facing off against Karla Sofía Gascón from Emilia Pérez, Cynthia Erivo from Wicked, Madison from Anora, and Demi Moore from The Substance.
As for filmmakers, Coralie Fargeat could also go down in Oscars history as she could become the first-ever French female director to win in the Best Director category.
Coraline was nominated for the prestigious category following her work on the hit horror sci-fi The Substance. This film follows the story of a fading celebrity Elisabeth Sparkle (played by actress Demi Moore), who injects herself with a black-market drug that contains a cell-replicating substance that transforms her into a younger and better version of herself.
In the Best Director category, the 48-year-old director will be facing off against filmmakers Sean Baker for Anora, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Jacques Audiard for Emilia Perez.
