The Washington Commanders are charging ahead with ambitious plans to construct a stunning $3.7 billion stadium on the historic site of the old RFK Stadium, despite facing challenges from none other than Donald Trump.
Recently, the Washington Commanders held vital discussions with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and key district leaders as they seek the necessary approvals for their groundbreaking stadium project. In May 2023, a new chapter began when Josh Harris and David Blitzer, along with a prominent group that includes NBA superstar Magic Johnson, acquired the franchise from Dan Snyder for a staggering $6.05 billion. This acquisition heralded an exciting new era for the team, leading to significant changes, including the hiring of head coach Dan Quinn and the recruitment of quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Last season, this rejuvenated Commanders team made it to the NFC Championship Game, tantalizing fans with a glimpse of a Super Bowl run, the first since Super Bowl XXVI. However, the challenge of securing a new stadium remains a formidable hurdle for the franchise’s owners and managementparticularly with Trump expressing his discontent.
Back in April, the Commanders struck a deal indicating that D.C. would foot approximately $1 billion of the total $3.7 billion stadium cost. Just recently, Commanders president Mark Clouse made a compelling presentation to the city’s council, advocating for the final approval needed to move forward with their plans at the RFK Stadium site.
“This is a historic moment brimming with extraordinary opportunity,” Clouse conveyed, as reported by WTOP. “Together, we have the chance to facilitate a rapid and impactful transformation of the RFK site into a place that fosters community, stimulates economic growth, and demonstrates the incredible potential that arises from aligning public intention with private dedication.”
Clouse elaborated that the new stadium project could generate approximately $1.3 billion in gross revenue during its inaugural year, with a striking 57 percent of that expected to contribute new net revenue to D.C. Additionally, the project is projected to spur around $800 million in direct spending. Mayor Bowser characterized the stadium deal as a BFD a big f—— deal emphasizing its potential as an economic catalyst for the surrounding region.
Looking ahead to the meeting, Bowser urged council members: “I am asking for your strong, unified vote to help us rejuvenate our economy, create jobs, expand business opportunities, and welcome our team back home.” She reiterated her view, adding, “To borrow a phrase, this is a BFD. Very big.”
In anticipation of the council meeting, the Commanders delivered a commitment letter ensuring they would cover any potential cost overruns as well as ongoing maintenance expenses. Harris and Blitzer, who also own the NBAs Philadelphia 76ers and the NHLs New Jersey Devils, face mounting pressure to consider reviving the iconic Redskins name and logo, which has been retired. Recently, Trump publicly criticized the franchise, referring to them sarcastically as the Washington Whatevers.
Trump further hinted that he could obstruct the Commanders’ plans for a new stadium unless they meet his demands regarding the franchises name. On Truth Social, the former president stated, “I may put a restriction on them that if they dont change the name back to the original Washington Redskins, and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, Washington Commanders, I wont make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington.”
It’s important to note that the proposed RFK Stadium will be constructed on federal land leased to the D.C. government for the next 99 years, which necessitates approvals from several agencies such as the National Capital Planning Commission and the U.S. Commission of Fine Artsboth of which include Trump appointees on their boards.
As this incredible project unfolds, both sports fans and local residents are left wondering: will the Commanders successfully navigate the political landscape to realize their vision for a new stadium? The stakes are high, and the anticipation is palpable. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding saga!
