The NFL Wednesday injury report often isn’t too illuminating – a player missing practice midweek generally has no bearing on his availability for Sunday’s game.
Even so, fans of the Dallas Cowboys may have been surprised to see star kicker Brandon Aubrey on the injury report Wednesday. The reason was a rare one: jury duty.
The kicker was selected to a 12-person jury in Texas’s 297th District Court in Tarrant County. The Cowboys pushed to get him out of it but Aubrey was reportedly keen to stay.
What’s the case? According to the local Fort-Worth-Star-Telegram, Aubrey will preside over “a third-degree strangulation charge [featuring] Judge David Hagerman, [a] former football player in the 1970s at the University of North Texas.”

Aubrey is expected to return to Cowboys practice on Thursday ahead of the team’s Week 8 home matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
The 29-year-old originally had his professional sights set on a career in professional soccer. Aubrey was a First-team All-ACC selection at the University of Notre Dame during a successful college career.
He was selected by Toronto FC with the 21st pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. After a few failed loan spells, he eventually decided to transition to kicking.

Aubrey first starred with the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL from 2022-2023, winning two league championships and earning All-USFL honors in 2022.
Aubrey signed with Dallas ahead of the 2022 season and had one the greatest seasons by any kicker in NFL history. He converted 36 of 38 attempts – including all 10 from more than 50 yards – to earn First-team All-Pro honors.
The Cowboys kicker nailed a 66-yard field goal in the 2024 preseason and a 65-yarder against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3, the second-longest kick in NFL history.

Following his spectacular make, Fox broadcaster Tom Brady dubbed Aubrey the “Steph Curry of kickers,” following up by remarking “There’s no range that’s too far.”
Aubrey wasn’t the only key Cowboy on Wednesday’s injury reporter: cornerback DaRon Bland and edge rusher Micah Parsons were both listed as DNPs.
Parsons has played just four games this year and has logged only a single sack – he topped 13 each of the last three seasons. Bland, a First-team All-Pro last season after setting the NFL record with five pick-sixes, has yet to feature in 2024.
