Is it really that hard to believe that Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift genuinely enjoy each other’s company? Kansas City Chiefs president Mark Donovan seems to think so, as he once again found himself in the position of addressing rumors that the relationship between the NFL star and the pop icon is merely a marketing ploy rather than a real romance.
“I’d love to say that it was a marketing strategy, but it is an authentic relationship, and we’re happy to have it,” Donovan told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
Not only is the romance between Kelce and Swift very real, but Donovan emphasized that Swift is now, by extension, a genuine Kansas City Chiefs fan. “It’s been nothing but good for us,” he continued. “I think the best thing I can say about the whole relationship and the impact it’s had on us is: Taylor Swift is an authentic member of the Kansas City Chiefs kingdom. She is an authentic fan, and that matters to our fans and our fanbase. It matters to us, and we try to respect that.”
For Donovan, the key word is “respect,” which is precisely why Chiefs fans won’t see a lot of Taylor Swift coverage on the scoreboard or hear her songs blaring through the loudspeakers at Arrowhead Stadium.
As Donovan explained earlier this year, the Chiefs are not trying to exploit the high-profile romance for extra publicity. “We’re trying to celebrate it, but it’s not about doing too much or showing her every touchdown or anything like that,” Donovan said.

This balanced approach speaks to the franchise’s respect not only for Swift as a fan but also for the broader fanbase that values authenticity. While the Chiefs are grateful for the added attention that Swift’s presence has brought, they are also keenly aware of the importance of maintaining a genuine game-day experience.
For anyone who’s missed the buzz, Kelce’s romance with Swift has significantly increased the NFL’s visibility, attracting new fans who might not have previously paid much attention to football. It’s also helped Kelce himself become a media darling and a sought-after spokesperson, further boosting his popularity. In January, Apex Marketing Group reported that Swift’s regular appearances at Chiefs games had elevated the NFL’s brand value by an estimated $331.5 million.
Yet, not everyone is convinced that the Kelce-Swift relationship is real. Inevitably, conspiracy theories have emerged, suggesting the union is a calculated move for commercial or even political reasons.
Mike Crispi, a pro-Donald Trump broadcaster, made headlines in January when he shared his skepticism on X (formerly Twitter). “The NFL is totally RIGGED for the Kansas City Chiefs, Taylor Swift, Mr. Pfizer (Travis Kelce),” Crispi wrote, alleging that the supposed scheme was intended “to spread DEMOCRAT PROPAGANDA.”
He went on to make a series of bold predictions, suggesting that the Chiefs would go on to win and advance to the Super Bowl, where Swift would make an appearance at the halftime show to endorse President Joe Biden, alongside Kelce. “Calling it now: KC wins, goes to Super Bowl, Swift comes out at the halftime show and ‘endorses’ Joe Biden with Kelce at midfield,” Crispi wrote, adding, “It’s all been an op since day one.”
Despite the wild conspiracy theories, the reality is much simpler—Kelce and Swift appear to be enjoying their time together, and the Chiefs organization has been happy to support their star player and his relationship.
For the Chiefs, it’s about fostering an inclusive and respectful community of fans, and Swift’s authentic fandom only enhances that spirit.
As for the Chiefs themselves, the 9-1 team is continuing to dominate the season. They will visit Charlotte this Sunday to take on the 3-7 Carolina Panthers, leaving conspiracy theories in the dust as they focus on football and their championship ambitions.
