ABC World News Tonight host David Muir began his latest show with an update on Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which ended without a ceasefire deal
ABC issued a brutal blow to Donald Trump as World News Tonight anchor David Muir said the President had failed to secure his much-wanted ceasefire deal with Vladimir Putin.
The two world leaders met in Alaska on Friday to try and reach an agreement to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. After an almost three-hour meeting, Trump declared they had failed to reach an agreement, saying, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
The news was covered on Muir’s Friday night show as the anchor looked into Trump’s ceasefire defeat. Muir began the report by saying, “Good evening and it’s great to have you with us on a Friday night and we begin tonight with this historic, high-stakes summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. President Trump going into the summit saying he wanted a ceasefire from Putin in this war in Ukraine and he wanted it today.”
Muir then issued a blow to Trump as he continued, “Coming out of this summit, moments ago both leaders speaking. President Trump saying there’s no deal until there’s a deal, saying there were many points agreed on but he said, ‘I would say a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there but we’ve made some headway.'”
Muir then pointed out there was “no declaration of any kind of ceasefire,” despite Trump’s promises. As the video showed Trump and Putin, the news anchor added, “President Trump inviting Putin to Anchorage, Alaska, to Joint Base ElmendorfRichardson. After meeting for more than two-and-a-half hours, the two coming before cameras just moments ago.
“Putin calling the conversations with President Trump ‘trustworthy,’ using the word ‘agreement,’ but Putin offering no details about any kind of agreement reached. Neither of them saying what they had agreed to. President Trump saying, ‘I will call up NATO in a little while. I will call the various people I think are appropriate and of course I will call up President Zelenskyy and tell him about today’s meeting.’ Ultimately, President Trump said, ‘It’s up to them.'”
The clip then showed Trump and Putin greeting one another, with Muir saying, “Putin getting a red carpet welcome. President Trump waiting for him to arrive there in Alaska, extending a handshake, a warm welcome, ending the isolation Putin has faced from the U.S and the west since he invaded Ukraine three-and-a-half years ago.
“The two standing for photos, Alaska’s mountains there in the distance, flanked by F-22 Raptors, B-2 Bombers flying overhead, symbols of course of American power. The two of them then getting into President Trump’s motorcade, the presidential limousine known as ‘The Beast’, Putin’s smile seen in that window as they drove away to the meeting site for the summit.”
The video then showed the summit. Muir continued, “Then of course the meeting, Trump and Putin each with two senior aides. Trump going into this, of course, hoping to set up a second summit, he said, with Putin and President Zelenskyy. President Trump saying he would be happy to attend that summit as well.
“President Zelenskyy was not invited to this meeting today. President Trump tonight saying he will now call President Zelenskyy.”
A clip of the report was shared on Instagram with the caption, “After hours behind closed doors, Pres. Trump and Pres. Putin emerged from the U.S.-Russia summit an event not seen in over a decade on American soil. Trump said there was “great progress” in the meeting, but stopped short of announcing a ceasefire deal. @MaryKBruce has details.”
Viewers were quick to share their thoughts on the summit, with one person expressing, “God help our United States of America. Sadly we have in incompetent leader!”
“Steamrolled. Another failure under the Trump administration,” another fumed, while a third viewer sarcastically recalled, “He was going to end the war on day 1.” Someone else shared, “Without Zelenskyy there could not be a deal.”
“No final agreement had been reached yet…. Some points of agreement and there will be an active ongoing negotiation towards ceasefire and ending the Russia- Ukraine War…. Meanwhile, the bombardment continues….” a fifth follower commented.
