NFL Insider Ian Rapaport reported on Tuesday that New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers “has a knee injury, and his status is uncertain for Sunday.”
“In all honesty, it’s just too early to tell,” Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “If I’m a betting man, I’m betting on Aaron Rodgers to play.”
The 4-11 Jets are set to host the streaking 12-3 Buffalo Bills as Josh Allen and company look to track down the AFC’s top seed.
Rodgers recently mentioned on ‘The Pat McAfee’ show how there’s a non-zero chance the team decides to release him this offseason. If he doesn’t play against Buffalo or in Week 18 against the Miami Dolphins, Rodgers will have played his last game as a Jet.
Rodgers hurt his knee during the team’s loss last Sunday to the Los Angeles Rams. While the 41-year-old didn’t exit the game, backup Tyrod Taylor began warming up on the sideline in case a change was needed.
“With him, probably not in all honesty,” Ulbrich said regarding his level of concern of Rodgers’s injury. “He does whatever it takes to get on the field on Sunday. I’d anticipate him trying to do the same thing this week.”
The veteran Tayor signed a two-year deal with New York before the 2024 campaign and has yet to start a game for the franchise.
The 35-year-old was a Pro Bowler with Buffalo back in 2015, his first year as a full-time starter in the NFL. The duel-threat quarterback nicknamed “T-Mobile” passed for 3,035 yards that campaign while adding a further 568 on the ground.
Rodgers joked to Pat McAfee on Monday that “Being released would be a first….being released by a teenager, that would also be a first.”
He referenced a recent story about team owner Woody Johnson listening to his teenage sons Brick and Jack for roster advice.
“What’s best for the Jets is not having these type of leaks all the time, and when that gets figured out then it’ll be a little easier to win,” Rodgers continued.
“I mean, it doesn’t have a direct impact on the players on the field, but it has an impact on the culture and the chemistry and the overall energy of the building, and that’s what needs to get better.”
On the season, the Jets quarterback has completed 62.8% of his passes for 3,511 yards with a tidy 24-8 touchdown-interception ratio. His 52.2 QBR ranks 23rd in the league.
