Two separate Oscars voters have admitted they did not vote for Ralph Fiennes to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role as they wrongly believed he had “won before.”
The English actor, 62, has been nominated for his role in Conclave, a political thriller based off a 2016 novel by Robert Harris and is directed by Edward Berger. The plot is around a conclave, a meeting that is called when Catholic Cardinals gather to elect a new pope.
In the film, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Fiennes) leads the conclave. However, amid his search for a new pope, he uncovers secrets and scandals about the possible candidates to lead the Catholic Church.

The other nominees for Best Actor are Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) and Adrien Brody (The Brutalist). Now, two voters have admitted that they didn’t vote for Ralph as they both believed he won an Oscar for Schindler’s List at the Oscars in 1994.
Ralph was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the time, but didn’t win it, with Tommy Lee Jones getting the award for his role in The Fugitive. After learning that Ralph hadn’t won the award before, one of the voters told Variety, “Oh s–t!”
Both voters admitted they voted for Adrien instead, even though he had actually won an Oscar for The Pianist at the 2003 Academy Awards. Adrien has dominated the Best Actor category since he won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), Critics Choice Award and Golden Globes for his role in The Brutalist.
But two people admitting to their mistake doesn’t weaken Ralph’s chances to receive an award at the ceremony on Sunday, as there are now 10,910 members of the Academy, with 9,934 eligible to vote on the Oscars. In 1994, Schindler’s List won seven Academy Awards including the prestigious Oscar for Best Picture, as well as Best Director and Best Cinematography. Ralph won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for his role in the war film.
Fans of Ralph were stunned to realize he had not yet won an Academy Award. One wrote online, “Putting the blasphemous reality that Oscar voters don’t know who has Oscars aside Ralph Fiennes’ performance not winning the Oscar in 1994 still boggles my mind.”
Others have suggested the actor should be spoken of in the same regard as legendary three-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis. They wrote, “I feel like we should be talking about Ralph Fiennes the same way we talk about Daniel Day-Lewis.”
Ralph won a Critics Choice Award for his role in Conclave in the run-up to the Academy Awards. Timothée picked up a SAG-AFTRA win for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, while Sebastian was handed a Golden Globes win.
The Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles tomorrow night. You can watch the The 97th Academy Awards on ABC, and the event will also be streamed live on Hulu.
