The atmosphere was electric and tensions were high at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma, on Wednesday night, as the Kentucky Wildcats narrowly edged out the Oklahoma Sooners 83-82 in a gripping men’s NCAA basketball game.

The intensity of the game, however, spilled over into a post-game incident that marred the victory celebration.

As the final buzzer sounded and the Kentucky players made their way to the tunnel, the mood among the home crowd soured, culminating in a moment of unsportsmanlike conduct. Amidst the chorus of boos from the disappointed Oklahoma fans, a beer can was thrown in the direction of the celebrating Wildcats.

A video captured at the scene shows the can flying dangerously close to one of the players, highlighting the charged emotions of the spectators.

The game itself had been a highly charged affair, particularly due to the presence of Otega Oweh and Brandon Garrison, both of whom had previously played for colleges in Oklahoma.

Oweh, a former Sooner, and Garrison, who had played at Oklahoma State, were central figures in the night’s drama. Oweh, returning to a familiar court, notched a career-high 28 points, including a pivotal game-winning basket. Garrison, for his part, made a critical block in the game’s dying moments, sealing the win for Kentucky.

During the game, the atmosphere had been hostile towards the former Oklahoma players. Oweh faced chants of “traitor” from the crowd each time he took a free throw, underscoring the animosity from the fans over his transfer. Despite the external pressures, both players performed exceptionally, with Garrison contributing 12 points, four rebounds, three steals, and three blocks to the team’s effort.

After the game, Garrison spoke to reporters, reflecting on the emotional homecoming and the tense atmosphere. With his young daughter by his side at the podium, he shared, “Just me being back home, they tried to get up under my skin right when I got in the game. Things got a little chippy at the end, but it’s just basketball — nothing more, nothing less.”

The incident with the beer can, though not resulting in any injuries, serves as a reminder of the passions that college basketball can stir and the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and safety at athletic events.

It also highlighted the personal stakes and pressures athletes face when they return to compete against former teams.

While the night ended in victory for Kentucky, the actions of a few fans left a blemish on what was otherwise a thrilling college basketball showcase, filled with remarkable performances and a testament to the enduring rivalries in NCAA basketball.
