Ex-New York Jets safety Jamal Adams wished his former team nothing but the best amidst their tumultuous season.
On Tuesday, the Jets’ 2024-25 campaign hit another low point after general manager Joe Douglas was relieved of his duties. In his absence, ex-Browns GM Phil Savage will take over as the Interim General Manager for New York’s final six games of the season.
Addressing the firing, team owner Woody Johnson wrote in an official statement: “Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as General Manager of the New York Jets.

“I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward. Phil Savage will be the Interim General Manager for the remainder of the season. We will begin the process to identify a new General Manager immediately.”
Though the Jets have posted a meager 30-64 record since Douglas was hired in June of 2019, the 48-year-old showed several flashes of brilliance during his tumultuous tenure. He is widely considered to have aced the 2022 NFL Draft, which netted New York Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson and DROTY Sauce Gardner, as well as running back Breece Hall and pass rusher Jermaine Johnson.
Douglas is additionally credited with orchestrating a blockbuster trade involving Adams. In exchange for the All-Pro safety and a 2022 fourth-round pick, the Jets received a first-round selection and third-round pick in 2021, a 2022 first-round pick and Safety Bradley McDougald.

Taking to social media on the heels of Douglas’ ousting, Adams couldn’t help but feel bad for the organization that drafted him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. “All jokes aside, I really hope the Jets organization can get it right!” he wrote on X before adding: “The organization & fan base deserves to Win!!”
Over 46 games for the Jets, Adams amassed 210 tackles, 12 sacks, four fumble recoveries and two interceptions. While the three-time Pro Bowler seemingly has no hurt feelings towards his old team, his tenure in New York hardly ended on a high note.
In the summer of 2020, Adams requested a trade from the Jets after the two sides made little progress on a long-term extension. Speaking to New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta, the star defensive back aired many of his grievances with the organization – in particular Douglas.
“Why would Joe come out and say, ‘We want to make Jamal a Jet for life?'” Adams said at the time. “Why would you say that and then not even give me an offer?… Don’t B.S. me. I’m a straightforward guy. You don’t have to B.S. me, because I’m going to keep it honest.”
Discussing the Jets top brass’ concerns that he wasn’t “all-in,” Adams added: “It was very insulting,” Adams said. “You know I bust my — for that organization every day. I work my — off. For them to say that to me, I was like ‘OK … Whoa! That was little bit too far.'”
