Wrexham’s head coach Phil Parkinson is facing a tough call on star striker Paul Mullin, which might not sit well with the fans or Ryan Reynolds.
Since his arrival in July 2021, Mullin has been pivotal for the Red Dragons, bagging 108 goals across competitions and propelling the team to consecutive promotions. But this season in League One, after back surgery, he’s only hit the net once in eleven games, despite scoring twice in the EFL Trophy.
Ex-England star Carlton Palmer has controversially suggested that Parkinson should hunt for a new goal machine in January to keep Wrexham’s promotion dream alive as they stand third in the league. Palmer pointed out Mullin’s limited action at this level with Tranmere Rovers, telling Football League World: “He’s been prolific, as we’ve seen before…but he’s untested at League One level.

“Wrexham is doing really, really well. At the moment, they’re sat in third place, of course they want to go again this season and get another promotion. I think they’ll probably have to look past Paul Mullin with all due respect. Looking at his history, he’s not prolific in League One.
“If they want someone who is prolific they would have to go out and get somebody who scores goals in League One and I think they will in January. It’s very, very tight in those play-off spots. They will need somebody who can score goals, but given two successive promotions, they’re going along great at the moment. It is a worry that Paul Mullin does not score goals at League One level.”
Signing someone to replace Mullin would be a daring move for Parkinson considering his impressive scoring record over the past few seasons. The forward also shares a strong connection with the club’s fans and co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Reynolds even gave him a small role in his recent Deadpool and Wolverine blockbuster where he portrayed a character named Welshpool. He appeared during a scene featuring a collection of other Deadpool variants.
Fellow Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer also cameos in the move, briefly appearing as a bartender. Reynolds has often used the club, which he and McElhenney purchased for around $2.5 million, as an unlikely marketing tool for his other professional exploits.
Meanwhile, Mullin, a lifelong Liverpool fan, recently confessed that he’d likely watch more Wrexham games than those of his hometown club once he retires from playing. He told the BBC: “I used to watch Liverpool home and away, and go all over the world, but that would change if my career ended tomorrow.”
“I’d be going to watch Wrexham everywhere. I absolutely love the place for everything it’s given me and the support the fans have given me. I’ve been here long enough now, Wrexham’s become part of me. I’m really attached to this club so I always want to do well.”
